articulate the problem your audience is facing – and the benefits of solving it.And the one where philanthropist Bill Gates looses a swarm of (harmless) mosqitoes into the audience when talking about the battle to conquer malaria. There’s the one where neuro-anatomist Jill Bolte Taylor uses a real brain, complete with dangling spinal column, to illustrate her description of the different functions of the two cerebral hemispheres. You see props used in TED talks to memorable effect. So while it is self-defeating to talk while displaying wordy slides (because people can’t read and listen at the same time) a powerful relevant image serves to complement and enhance the listening experience. Equally importantly, pictures don’t compete with words. The ‘picture superiority effect’ tells us that concepts are more memorable if they are presented as pictures than as words. There is a lot of truth in the old saw that ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’. I can’t attest to the factual accuracy of these statements, but they do make you sit up and think ‘wow, really?’ Apple used to brag that more iphones were sold in the previous fiscal quarter than babies born in the entire world. One of them, from Germany, came up with the amazing statistic that more people die of heart disease in Germany every year than the total numbers killed in World War 2. I was once training an international group of pharmaceutical company executives on how to talk about heart disease. Reference a gobsmacking fact or statistic.Too many quotes and you sound like a ventriloquist’s dummy. Two rules about quotations: first, they must make your key point more pithily and wittily than you could in your own words secondly, they are best used sparingly. If you can make this clear from the start you will motivate them to stick around for the final reveal.Īnother of my colleagues, keen to stress that presentations must be targeted to the specific needs and interests of audiences, likes to quote communications expert Ken Haemer’s advice that ‘Designing a presentation without an audience in mind is like writing a love letter and addressing it: To Whom It May Concern’. Unsurprisingly, most audiences are a great deal less interested in what you want to tell them than in what they have to gain from listening. Tell your audience what’s in it for them.‘There are two reasons companies fail: they only do more of the same or they only do what’s new.’ It never fails to raise a laugh, which is another way to get your audience on side.Įncapsulate your main theme in an intriguing little nutshell like business strategist Knut Haanaes in his TED talk on business failure. A minority don’t raise their hands and I then point out that we must have some liars in the room since, as Mark Twain famously remarked: ‘There are two types of speakers: those that are nervous and those that are liars’. I often start my own presentations by asking who feels nervous at the prospect of speaking in public. One of my colleagues starts her presentation (on presentation skills) by asking how many people love giving presentations, and then picks on individuals to find out why they do – or don’t – love them. There’s no better way of commanding attention than asking a question to which a response may be required. And let the story speak for itself without spending too much time drawing out the key message at the end. Don’t start with: ‘I’d like to tell you a story’. For maximum impact your story should be brief, punchy and highly relevant to your topic. While overt key messages leave us cold, stories with implicit messages enthral, compel and move us. Humans are hard-wired to respond to stories, which predate the written word as a form of communication. A confident stroll to the microphone, a warm smile taking in the entire audience, and brief but telling pause before your first carefully crafted utterance will have them hanging on your next words. You can recognise a great speaker in micro-seconds by the way they occupy their physical space. Here are my top 10 recommended attention-grabbing techniques. What can you do to engage their attention and leave them hungry for more? Do not make a title page for your paper unless specifically requested or the paper is assigned as a group project.Entitle the section Notes (centered, unformatted). If you have any endnotes, include them on a separate page before your Works Cited page.Use italics throughout your essay to indicate the titles of longer works and, only when absolutely necessary, provide emphasis.Always follow your instructor's guidelines.) (Note: Your instructor may ask that you omit the number on your first page. Create a header that numbers all pages consecutively in the upper right-hand corner, one-half inch from the top and flush with the right margin.MLA recommends that you use the “Tab” key as opposed to pushing the space bar five times. Indent the first line of each paragraph one half-inch from the left margin.Set the margins of your document to 1 inch on all sides.Leave only one space after periods or other punctuation marks (unless otherwise prompted by your instructor).Whatever font you choose, MLA recommends that the regular and italics type styles contrast enough that they are each distinct from one another. Double-space the text of your paper and use a legible font (e.g.Type your paper on a computer and print it out on standard, white 8.5 x 11-inch paper.Below are some basic guidelines for formatting a paper in MLA Style : General Guidelines The preparation of papers and manuscripts in MLA Style is covered in part four of the MLA Style Manual. See the Additional Resources section of this page for a list of helpful books and sites about using MLA Style. It is also widely available in bookstores, libraries, and at the MLA web site. The MLA Handbook is available in most writing centers and reference libraries. Publishing scholars and graduate students should also consult the MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing (3rd edition). If you are asked to use MLA format, be sure to consult the MLA Handbook (9th edition). Most importantly, the use of MLA style can protect writers from accusations of plagiarism, which is the purposeful or accidental uncredited use of source material produced by other writers. Writers who properly use MLA also build their credibility by demonstrating accountability to their source material. MLA Style also provides writers with a system for referencing their sources through parenthetical citation in their essays and Works Cited pages. Having an app to control the light on your phone can be helpful for this because you can turn the light green before you walk in. This means that before you go into their room, make sure the light is turned green. Just know that if your little one is younger than 3 years old, your main goal is simple: We just want to start showing them that when the light turns green, we start the day. You can start using color-changing clocks at any age. When should a toddler start using a clock? What age? # anchor If your wake-up range is between 6:30 and 7:00 am, then keep the light green for just a touch longer, so it's green when you go in to wake your child if they're not awake by 7:00 am. I love a wake-up range of about 30 minutes or so at this age. How long should the wake-up color stay on in the morning? # anchor This helps get your toddler excited about using the clock and reinforces the process. The important thing is to acknowledge and praise them for their efforts. When your toddler follows the cues of the clock, praise them for it. Have them practice a few times so they feel comfortable with what the colors mean and understand your expectations. Show your child the different colors and what they should do when the clock changes colors. Don’t forget to show your toddler how the clock works. This will help reinforce what they are hearing from you as well. When your toddler sees the clock light on before bedtime or during their bedtime routine, they receive a visual cue from their clock that it’s time for bed. Consider turning the clock light to your “night” color before entering the room for bedtime. Just know that for a child who regularly wakes at 6:00 am, a clock that doesn’t turn on until 7:00 am is likely to cause frustration for you both. Now, if your little one already sleeps until 7:00 am regularly, it’s perfectly fine to set your clock to turn on at 7:00 am instead. If your child is waking before 6:00 am, my blog about Early Morning Wakings can help. Set the clock to turn on at 6:00 am or just a bit after so your toddler knows it’s “ok to wake” if they make it to this time. # anchorįor most young children, a natural and biologically appropriate wake time is between 6:00 and 7:00 am. Here are some of my best tips for setting up your toddler’s clock: Set the toddler clock to turn on at a realistic time. How do I use an OK-to-wake clock? # anchor Get your toddler involved and give them the opportunity to use their voice to make a decision in the new routine. If your color-changing clock allows you to pick the color, feel free to let your little one choose a color that makes sense to them. If the OK-to-wake clock allows it, we want to set the light setting to its dimmest effective brightness.įor wake-up time, green is the most commonly used color. If you do decide to use your color-changing clock as a night light, I recommend using red for nights because it is the least disruptive color for sleep. If your child doesn’t need a night light, then there is no need to use it for bedtime or during sleep you can leave it turned "off" at night, while using for wake-up in the morning. Some color-changing or OK-to-wake clocks can also act as a night light. I'll hand you the tools you need to navigate sleep with your 2, 3, or 4-year-old so that your whole family can thrive What color should I use for my color-changing clock? # anchor If you need a more holistic, step-by-step plan for your toddler's sleep, check out my Toddler Sleep Training class. It’s also important to maintain a consistent bedtime routine to signal to your toddler that it’s time to get ready to go to bed. This will require you to be consistent in communicating your expectations and holding firm to boundaries for your toddler. It will act as a visual tool and reminder to communicate expectations to your toddler for when it is or isn’t time to get out of bed. Toddlers thrive on routine and boundaries, so using an OK-to-wake clock can help in both these areas. Toddler clocks are not a standalone solution for early morning wakings, night sleep struggles, or bedtime battles, but they can be helpful! No matter the name, OK-to-wake clocks can be a helpful tool for toddler sleep. Let’s dive in! What is an OK-to-wake clock? # anchorĪn OK-to-wake clock is simply a clock that uses colors to visually cue your child’s brain that it’s time for sleep or it’s “ok to wake.” These clocks for little ones have several names: OK-to-wake clock, color-changing clock, sleep training clock, and toddler alarm clock, just to name a few. Toddler parents often wonder if they can use an OK-to-wake clock in their child’s bedroom, how to use it properly, and whether it will affect their toddler’s sleep.
